How long will my garlic bulbs last?
Garlic bulbs typically last anywhere from 3-6 months depending on their variety. Music Garlic is great for long term storage and easily lasts 6 months if stored properly. Garlic bulbs should be kept in an area that is dry, cool and well ventilated.
There are many ways to preserve garlic if you would like your garlic to last through the winter months until the next harvest. Some methods are extremely simple while others take a little more time effort and money.
Freezing Garlic
This probably the easiest way to keep your garlic as whole cloves. Simply crack open your bulbs and freeze the individual cloves with or without their paper covering in freezer bags.
Roasted Garlic
Another way I like to freeze garlic is to roast the individual cloves in a pan (at 400 degrees for 30-40 min) prior to freezing. This allows you to have roasted garlic available on short notice anytime you wish to add it to a recipe.
Refrigeration
Simply peel your garlic cloves, place them in a mason jar and then cover with white vinegar store in your refrigerator. When you are ready to use the garlic rinse well to remove vinegar and add to recipes as required.
Pickled Garlic
Pickled garlic requires a little bit more work then the previous options but adds a new dynamic to the garlic making it easily edible straight from the jar. It makes a great addition to charcuterie board or pickle tray.
Fermented Honey Garlic
Fermented honey garlic is known for it's health properties. It has been stated that it can boost your immune system. Fermenting Honey Garlic is an easy process only requiring you to combine honey and garlic together and release pressure building up for a few weeks.
Dehydrated Garlic and Garlic Powder
Dehydrating garlic is the only method that will require special equipment although it is possible to dehydrate in you oven if you like. Dehydrated garlic and garlic powder can be placed in a glass jar for use for 2-3 years.
